What is Microgreen Seeds?
Microgreen seeds are not really seeds at all, nor are they miniature green plants. In fact, these tiny plants are a type of plant called the Epiphytes or “ecogenetics” plants. This name was given to them because the reproductive organs of this species have only one set of leaves and the flowers have two sets of flowers. These tiny plants are members of the mustard family (boswellia) that are very closely related to cucumbers and tomatoes. The two main differences between these plants and their relatives are that they have one set of leaves and they have two sets of flowers. They do share some common characteristics however.
One of the main features of what is microgreen seeds – other than their uniqueness in size – is that they grow very well even with minimal amounts of water. Many gardeners love these plants because of their tolerance to drought and to a lack of sunlight. These plants can survive on just about anything that you give them including compost, composted bark, manure, and even waste products such as blood meal. What is more, if you plant them in pots, they can grow well even in extreme temperatures such as minus twelve degrees Fahrenheit.
Microgreen seeds – unlike other types of seeds – are actually underground. You cannot plant these seeds in a normal way because they will not germinate. If you want to grow them, you need to put them into a special type of container that is specifically designed for planting microgreens. These types of containers are available from most garden centers and even some supermarkets. Microgreen seeds should not be planted in regular kitchen garden soil. You must also make sure that the soil you use has good drainage and adequate amounts of nutrients to keep your plants healthy.
One of the best things about growing microgreens is that they can be started from seed. Unlike most other plants, these seeds are very easy to germinate. You can get a head start on what is Microgreen seeds – starting them from seed is as simple as putting a leaf into a plastic garbage can or a piece of cardboard. Do not put any peat moss in the trash or compost pile – it will not work. Microgreens need just a little bit of warmth and moisture, so that they can sprout new leaves and roots.
The first thing you will need to do before planting is to dig a hole or depression where you will be planting your Microgreen seeds. It is important that this area is not damp and not too wet. This can be done by digging a small hole about six inches deep and wide, then filling it with dirt and putting a sheet of plastic over the area. This will help protect your seedlings from the sun and from water.
The next step is to remove the excess dirt from the area. When doing this process, don’t just dump the extra soil in your compost bin. Instead, take about four cups of soil and add it to your garden bed or plant bed. This will create a healthy growing environment for your plants. If you are planting more than one plant, it may be easier to use a small pail and fill it with dirt, depending on how deep you need to put the soil in.
After you have planted your Microgreen seeds, you will need to water them well. Make sure they get plenty of water – about one inch of water per week. When watering them, don’t just drop water on the leaves. Use a hose to water deeply and thoroughly. If you find your plants are still not growing, you may want to apply a fertilizer. Talk to your local nursery for information on what to use.
Once your plants begin to sprout new leaves and roots, you’ll notice that you can now harvest your plants. Harvesting your plants is a simple process that most people know how to do. To harvest your plants, simply remove the top leaf of the plant and turn the plant upside down. Take the bottom leaf and gently flip it over so that you can remove the top portion of the plant and any new leaves that appear on the plant.
